FaceApp went viral twice with the same trick: show people their own face older, younger or as another gender. It still has 1.8 million ratings on the US App Store, averaging 4.7. Its recent reviews read differently. In the 100 most recent ones we read, 44 gave one star, mostly because nearly every filter now needs FaceApp PRO, trials are hard to cancel, and features people liked, such as video and face morph, have gone. Below are seven alternatives, grouped by the job you used FaceApp for, starting with the one we make. Stunna is a different kind of app, and we say plainly which of the others is better for each job.

The quick answer

For gender swaps, morphing and face swaps, Reface. For a better smile or a younger look, YouCam Perfect. For hair, beard and makeup try-ons, Facetune. For a selfie with better expressions that still looks like you, Retake AI. For a natural touch-up, Lensa. For filters plus retouching, Meitu. And if you want the photo to look better without changing your face at all, Stunna.

Two ways to make a photo better

FaceApp and most apps like it change the face: age, hair, beard, smile, features. That is great fun and sometimes useful, but the result is a slightly different person, and people who know you notice.

The other approach leaves the face alone and changes everything around it. In the pair below, the left photo has a face edit and the same dull light. The right one keeps the man's real face, beard and age, and swaps the grey sky for a clear morning. That is the kind of change Stunna makes.

1. Stunna: a better photo, the same face

We make Stunna, so take this entry with that in mind. Stunna is for people who like their face and dislike their photo. You pick one of more than 80 looks, such as Golden Hour, Golden Skin, Night Flash, Euro Summer or Glare Gone, and Stunna reshoots the photo with AI, keeping your face, pose, outfit and the place, and changing the light, the sky and the camera feel. It also has a Group Blink look for the group photo where one person closed their eyes. Our group photo guide has more on getting that shot right the first time.

There are no ads. Plans cost $6.99 a week, $17.99 a month or $69.99 a year, and the app adds 100+ pose guides and a camera with an adjustable glow light.

What Stunna does not do: aging, gender swaps, smiles, hairstyles, beards, makeup, face swaps or video. If that is what you came for, the apps below are the right choice. Stunna is new, with too few store ratings to quote, and AI results vary, so compare each one with your original.

2. Reface: for gender swaps and face swaps

Reface is the closest to FaceApp's fun side. It does gender swaps and face morphing, swaps your face into videos, GIFs and movie scenes, adds AI lip sync, and has a hairstyle try-on, AI avatars and a baby generator. It is rated 4.8 from about 496,000 US ratings, with plans from $2.49 a week or $24.99 a year. The free version has ads. Pick it for laughs with friends. Skip it if you want a photo you would actually post as yourself.

3. YouCam Perfect: smiles, facelifts and bodies

YouCam Perfect, from Perfect Corp, covers the edits people used FaceApp's smile and young filters for: AI Smile, an AI facelift for a more youthful look, a face shaper, skin retouching, body reshaping and an AI wardrobe with more than 100 outfits. It also turns photos into short videos. It is rated 4.8 from about 119,000 US ratings, with Premium at $5.99 a month. On Android it has ads and a lower 3.9 rating.

4. Facetune: hair, beard and makeup

Facetune, from Lightricks, has more than 20 AI hairstyles, beard and hair try-ons and virtual makeup, plus the retouching it is known for: smoothing, reshaping and teeth whitening. It is rated 4.6 from about 379,000 US ratings. Its website lists $25 a month or $77.99 a year, and its reviews share FaceApp's complaints about trials and cancelling. We compare it in depth in our guide to apps like Facetune.

5. Retake AI: better expressions, still you

Retake AI trains a model on 10 to 15 of your photos, then produces several retakes of a shot with better expressions, open eyes or a smile, aiming to keep you recognizable. It is rated 4.6 from about 52,000 US ratings and costs $4.99 to $14.99 a week or $59.99 a year. Pick it if FaceApp's smile filter was your favorite. Our Retake AI review goes into the details.

6. Lensa: a light touch

Lensa, from Prisma Labs, retouches selfies without the heavy edited look, removes objects and distractions, adds filters to photos and videos, and sells AI avatar packs. It is rated 4.7 from about 418,000 US ratings, with plans from $2.99 a week, and Google Play does not flag it for ads. Pick it for subtle improvements. Skip it if you want dramatic transformations.

7. Meitu: retouching plus trend filters

Meitu combines face retouching, body shaping, makeup and hairstyle try-ons with trend looks like digicam filters, an AI flash effect and film grain, plus a video editor. It is rated 4.8 from about 80,000 US ratings. Its own listing sells VIP as the way to remove watermarks and ads, at $8.99 a week or $41.99 to $59.99 a year, so expect both on the free version.

Is FaceApp safe to use?

FaceApp drew scrutiny in July 2019, when its aging filter went viral. Senator Chuck Schumer asked the FBI and the FTC to look into the app, citing its Russian developers and its terms, and the DNC told 2020 presidential campaigns not to use it. FaceApp said at the time that it uploaded only the photo you chose and deleted most images within 48 hours.

Its current privacy policy, updated in November 2024, names FaceApp Technology Limited in Cyprus as the company responsible. It says photos are cached on its cloud servers while you edit, encrypted with a key stored on your phone, and deleted 24 to 48 hours after your last edit, and that they are used only to provide the editing. You can ask for removal in the app under Settings, Support, Request cloud data removal.

Every app on this list, Stunna included, processes photos with AI, usually in the cloud. Whatever you use, read the privacy policy and run the checks in our AI photo editing checklist before you share the result.

Why people leave FaceApp

These are the themes in FaceApp's 100 most recent US App Store reviews, from late July to late August 2026.

  • Almost everything needs PRO. Reviewers say only a couple of free filters remain.
  • Trials and cancelling. Several report being enrolled in a 3-day or 7-day trial and charged after cancelling.
  • Price. Reviewers cite $60 a year and say it keeps going up.
  • Missing features. Video, face morph and some makeup and background options are reported gone.
  • Hairstyle range. One reviewer points out there are no afros or braids.

Which one should you pick?

Decide whether you want to change your face or the photo.

  • A funny gender swap or a face in a movie scene: Reface.
  • A bigger smile or a younger look: YouCam Perfect or Retake AI.
  • A new haircut or beard, to see if it suits you: Facetune.
  • A small cleanup before posting: Lensa.
  • The same face in better light: Stunna. For more on prompts that edit light, see our ChatGPT photo editing prompts.

How we checked

Prices, features and ratings come from each app's US App Store listing, Google Play listing or official website, checked on October 12, 2026. FaceApp's App Store page lists PRO prices without billing periods, so we quote the $60 yearly price that reviewers mention. The 2019 history comes from CNBC's reporting, and current privacy details from FaceApp's own policy. We did not run the same photos through every app, so features are described as their developers list them. All apps named here belong to their developers, and Stunna is not affiliated with any of them.
