THE FILM CAMERA APP GUIDE
Best Film Camera Apps in 2026: Vintage & Retro Picks
Eight film, vintage and retro camera apps sorted by the job you need: shoot through a film camera, or give a saved photo a film look.

A film camera app does one of two jobs. Either it makes you shoot through a pretend camera, with a viewfinder, a film stock and sometimes a wait before the photo "develops", or it gives a photo you already took a film look. Most lists blur the two. We sorted eight vintage and retro camera apps by the job they do, checked every App Store and Google Play listing on October 19, 2026, and say where each one is the wrong pick. We make Stunna, which is one of the eight and is placed on the merits. If you are choosing between two specific apps, see our apps like Huji Cam guide.
Quick Answer
- Widest choice of film, instant and CCD cameras: Dazz Cam, which is iPhone only. We found no official Android listing from its publisher.
- The same idea on iPhone and Android, with photo import: ProCCD, 1998 Cam and OldRoll.
- A shoot-first camera that never edits: Hipstamatic on iPhone, or Huji Cam on both platforms.
- A film look on a photo you already took: Stunna, or the free browser tools in the recipe below.
- Ratings differ by store. Huji Cam is 4.2 on the App Store but 3.6 on Google Play, so check the store for your phone.
How We Picked These Apps
We opened each US App Store page and Google Play page on October 19, 2026 and copied the publisher, rating, rating count and price lines as listed. Where a listing shows a range per item rather than a billing period, we say so instead of guessing. We did not run one photo through all eight apps, so nothing here scores image quality. The order reflects how many different readers each app suits, not a points total.
- Platforms: iPhone, Android or both, from a listing by the same publisher.
- Shoot or edit: live camera, gallery import, or both.
- The look: disposable, instant, CCD digicam, 35mm or video.
- Price model: free download, subscription, single cameras or ads.
- Rating and review count in each store, dated.
Pick a Film Camera App by the Look You Want
Start with the look, then the app. The table pairs each look with two camera apps from this list and a free browser tool for a photo you already have.
The free tools run in your browser. The disposable camera filter handles flash snapshots, the digicam filter the CCD colour, the light leak filter warm edge glows, and add grain to photo the 35mm texture.
| The look | Camera apps to try | Free browser tool |
|---|---|---|
| Disposable flash snapshot | 1998 Cam, Huji Cam | Disposable camera filter |
| CCD digicam, early 2000s | ProCCD, Dazz Cam | Digicam filter |
| Warm film with light leaks | OldRoll, NOMO CAM | Light leak filter |
| 35mm grain and soft colour | Dazz Cam, Hipstamatic | Add grain to photo |
| Instant-photo tones and frames | OldRoll, Dazz Cam | Add white border to photo |
| A photo already in your library | Stunna, 1998 Cam, ProCCD | Disposable camera filter |
The 8 Best Film Camera Apps, Reviewed
Each entry shows the publisher, ratings and price model as the stores listed them on October 19, 2026. Prices change, so confirm them before you pay.
1. Dazz Cam, best range of film and CCD cameras (iPhone)
- Publisher and platforms
- DAZZ PTE. LTD.; iPhone only (no official Android listing found)
- Rating, Oct 19, 2026
- 4.8 from about 116K App Store ratings
- Price model as listed
- Free; Dazz Pro $6.99, one-time Pro $19.99, single cameras and accessories $0.99 to $2.99
Dazz Cam has the broadest camera shelf here. Its App Store text lists 135 and 120 film, toy, slide, half-frame, instant and disposable cameras, plus compact and CCD profiles and video looks such as 8mm and VHS. It can import existing photos, but only on select cameras.
The trade-off is access. Dazz sells a Pro tier, a one-time Pro and single cameras, and we found no official Android listing from its publisher. Google Play search shows several look-alike Dazz apps, so check the developer name before installing.
Best suited for: iPhone users who want to browse many film, instant and CCD cameras in one app.

2. OldRoll, best for browsing analog cameras on iPhone and Android
- Publisher and platforms
- accordion (Google Play); iPhone and Android
- Rating, Oct 19, 2026
- App Store 4.7 from about 5.6K; Google Play 4.3 from about 214K
- Price model as listed
- Free; subscription listed at $2.99 a month or $9.99 a year; Play: $0.49 to $94.99 per item, ads
OldRoll calls itself a film-inspired camera and retro photo editor. Its listing names instant, disposable and 120-style cameras, a customizable date stamp and a shooting timer, and it mentions video cameras as well.
Cost is the thing to read twice. The App Store text gives two subscription prices, the in-app purchase list shows more tiers, and Google Play lists purchases from $0.49 to $94.99 per item and carries ads.
Best suited for: People who like trying many analog camera styles and want one app on either platform.

3. ProCCD, best for CCD digicam looks with photo import
- Publisher and platforms
- cerdillac (Google Play); iPhone and Android
- Rating, Oct 19, 2026
- App Store 4.7 from about 2.2K; Google Play 4.8 from about 202K
- Price model as listed
- Free; subscriptions $3.99 a month, $9.99 a year (App Store text); Play: $0.29 to $23.99 per item, ads
ProCCD copies the pixel-style interface of CCD compact cameras and lists 40+ camera, camcorder and instant looks. Both store listings mention importing photos and videos, and the date stamp can be customized, so it covers shooting and editing a saved photo.
It also doubles as a carousel and collage maker, which is extra if you only want a camera. The App Store text lists $3.99 monthly and $9.99 yearly subscriptions; Google Play shows ads.
Best suited for: Anyone chasing the early digital-camera look on iPhone or Android, new shots or saved ones.

4. 1998 Cam, best for the 90s snapshot look with gallery import
- Publisher and platforms
- AAAI Studio LLC; iPhone and Android
- Rating, Oct 19, 2026
- App Store 4.8 from about 40K; Google Play 4.5 from about 830
- Price model as listed
- Free; monthly and yearly plans plus a $39.99 lifetime option (App Store); Play: $1.99 to $39.99 per item, ads
1998 Cam leans into the nineties snapshot: 100+ film filters, grain, dust, light leaks, classic date stamps and a live preview while you shoot. It also imports photos and videos from your gallery, so one app works before and after the shoot.
Its listings say premium filters, effects and exports can need a paid plan, and Google Play shows ads. The Android rating rests on far fewer reviews (about 830) than the iPhone one.
Best suited for: Readers who want the disposable, date-stamped look and the option to edit saved photos.

5. Stunna, best for giving a photo you already took a film look
- Publisher and platforms
- Reelpop Media LLC (the Stunna team); iPhone and Android
- Rating, Oct 19, 2026
- Too few store ratings to quote
- Price model as listed
- Free download; Pro subscription (App Store Pro options $4.99 to $69.99; Play: $4.99 to $44.99 per item)
We make Stunna, so weigh this entry with that in mind. It is not a film camera: there is no viewfinder, roll or develop wait. You pick a photo from your library and choose an AI look such as Disposable, 35mm Film, Digicam Y2K or Polaroid, and the app rebuilds the photo with that camera feel.
That is its strength and its limit. Use it when the shot is already in your camera roll, and compare faces, hands and details with the original, because AI results vary. To shoot through a film camera interface, pick Dazz Cam, OldRoll or ProCCD instead.
Best suited for: Anyone with a good photo already saved who wants a disposable, 35mm or digicam finish without reshooting.

6. Hipstamatic, best for a shoot-first camera with no ads (iPhone)
- Publisher and platforms
- Hipstamatic, LLC; iPhone (no Google Play listing found)
- Rating, Oct 19, 2026
- 4.6 from about 2.8K App Store ratings
- Price model as listed
- Free to start; Camera Club membership listed at $7.99, $19.99 and $29.99
Hipstamatic says it is not a photo editor. You pick a lens and a film, shoot, and the look is applied before the shutter. The listing cites 200+ lenses, 200+ films, and no ads or tracking.
That also means no editing of photos you already have. The full shelf needs Camera Club membership; the listing offers a first month free but does not show a billing period beside each price.
Best suited for: iPhone users who want a camera, not an editor, and like choosing a lens and film before they shoot.

7. NOMO CAM, best for buying single cameras instead of subscribing
- Publisher and platforms
- Beijing Lingguang Zaixian Information Technology Limited; iPhone and Android
- Rating, Oct 19, 2026
- App Store 4.7 from about 48K; Google Play 3.7 from about 13.6K
- Price model as listed
- Free; cameras bought individually; NOMO PRO $24.99 a year renewal; Play: $0.99 to $24.99 per item, no ads label
NOMO CAM sells cameras one at a time. Its listing says random analog effects such as grain, dust, light leaks and frames are added after you shoot, and it has a double-exposure mode.
Importing photos and switching off the develop wait on INS cameras sit behind NOMO PRO, which renews at $24.99 a year on the App Store. The Android rating (3.7) is well below the iPhone one (4.7).
Best suited for: People who want to pay for one or two cameras rather than a full subscription.

8. Huji Cam, best for one simple 1998 disposable look
- Publisher and platforms
- Manhole, Inc.; iPhone and Android
- Rating, Oct 19, 2026
- App Store 4.2 from about 12.0K; Google Play 3.6 from about 190K
- Price model as listed
- Free; $0.99 Extra Options purchase (App Store); Play: ads and in-app purchases
Huji Cam is the app that made the 1998 look famous. Its Google Play text describes a viewfinder camera where development starts after you shoot and continues only while the app is running, so it is about the ritual rather than range.
Pick it for simplicity. Skip it if you want many cameras or gallery editing, and note that its Google Play rating is the lowest quoted here. Our apps like Huji Cam guide covers the closest alternatives.
Best suited for: Anyone who wants a single, no-fuss disposable look rather than a shelf of cameras.

Film Camera App for iPhone or Android?
For a film camera app on iPhone, all eight have an App Store listing, and Dazz Cam and Hipstamatic are iPhone-first. On Android, ProCCD, OldRoll, 1998 Cam, NOMO CAM, Huji Cam and Stunna have Google Play listings. Our best Dazz Cam alternatives for Android guide goes deeper on that side.
None of the eight is fully free: every listing shows a Pro tier or in-app purchases. If you only want a vintage camera app for the occasional shot, try the free tools first.
Rebuild a Film Look for Free
You can get most of a film look on a saved photo without installing anything. Start from a sharp, well-lit photo; our warm film photo guide explains what makes a good source.
- Pick one base look: the disposable camera filter for flash snapshots, or the digicam filter for CCD colour. Save the result.
- Open the light leak filter, choose the Warm edge leak preset, then lower Leak strength until the glow sits at one edge.
- Save, then open add grain to photo and try Fine 35mm. Keep Grain amount modest and raise Grain size only for a rougher snapshot.
- Compare with the original at full size. If skin looks smeared, lower the grain before changing anything else.
Shoot Through a Camera or Edit Afterwards?
A camera app gives you the ritual and commits to the look as you shoot, which suits planned moments. An editing route keeps your phone's sharper camera and lets you choose the look later. For how much grain looks natural, see our film grain photo guide; for flash and date-stamp ideas, the disposable camera photo guide.
